Atonement by Ian McEwan

Atonement, which plays such a major role in Christianity, is explored with skill and heartbreaking poignancy in this moving novel from Ian McEwan. A young girl makes a mistake that wrecks the lives of those around her, and she spends the rest of her life trying to make it right.

The Edge of Sadness by Edwin O'Connor

Recipient of the 1962 Pulitzer Prize, The Edge of Sadness centers on a middle-aged priest who struggles with alcoholism and a desire to serve his calling while fending off temptations. The book was eye-opening in its day and hasn't lost any power since.

This book is a good reminder on how to avoid our temptations and how we can use prayer and staying connected to Godly people to avoid the temptation in the world. We can be in the world but not of the world.

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

"Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy."

This story…one of my favorites…is beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted Shel Silverstein.

Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave.

The Left Behind Series by Tim LaHaye and jerry B. Jenkins

"An airborne Boeing 747 is headed to London when, without any warning, passengers mysteriously disappear from their seats. Terror and chaos slowly spread not only through the plane but also worldwide as unusual events continue to unfold. For those who have been left behind, the apocalypse has just begun...”
