In our day Christians need to get much more serious about sharing and defending their faith. Two Books in the Champion Library that will help you are, Becoming a Contagious Christian, by Bill Hybels and Mark Mittleberg, and The Body by Charles Colson.
Becoming a Contagious Christian will help you in very practical ways to share your faith. Ideas about how to start a spiritual conversation and how to make the message clear to the person you are talking to are most helpful. You will get some help with just how to “rub shoulders” with unbelievers and you will get some help on just how your personality fits in with different ways to share the gospel. The book reminds us that we need to build relationships with people as well as learn how to break down the barriers to belief that people build up in their own lives and thinking..
In his book The Body: Being Light in the Darkness, Colson uses a style similar to his book Loving God in which he tells fascinating stories and then discusses how they relate to the needs of the church. This book is from the 1990s but the issues around how our culture is becoming more and more anti-Christian have only grown since then. This book is therefore still relevant to believers today. Many today disparage the church and say they do not need “organized religion.” But Jesus created the church and if we are to be his followers we need to help make the church be what he created it to be. We cannot be obedient and abandon his church. Colson looks at what the church is supposed to be, how it can confront the world and what that means for us as individuals. He warns against making Christian leaders “superstars” and calls each of us to use our gifts to serve. We need revival in the church so we can reach our world and Colson helps renew our vision for the church.
