The Boxcar Children is the first book in a series of an engaging, classic mystery/adventure series. Originally published in 1924, this book and later the series that followed has touched generations of children and continues to be a compelling read today.
Four orphaned children, Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny Alden get permission to stay at a bakery but run away after hearing the baker’s wife say she will keep the oldest three children but send the youngest, Benny, to an orphanage. They create a home for themselves in an abandoned boxcar in the forest. Their goal is to stay together, but run into difficulties in the process of trying to make a life for themselves.
