Champion Christian School Wellness Policy


As per Public Law 108-265, Section 204

Effective: August 28, 2006


Purpose

The Board of Directors of the Christian Family & Children’s Center recognizes that student wellness and proper nutrition are related to students’ physical well-being, growth, development, and readiness to learn. The Board is committed to providing a school environment that promotes student wellness, proper nutrition, nutrition education, and regular physical activity as part of the total learning experience in order to encourage future healthiness of CCS students as well as the immediate benefits to learning and achievement.


In light of the growing general unhealthiness of students and the rise in national childhood obesity percentages the Board recognizes the need to promote healthy lifestyles and habits as an important piece of the “whole person” education provided to the students of CCS. The Champion Christian School Wellness Policy has been developed in collaboration with the CCS Food Service department and input of CCS Administration, parents & students as well as community physicians.

To ensure the health and well-being of all students, the Board establishes that Champion Christian School shall provide to students:

 

          Access at reasonable cost (determined by the Board with guidelines from the National School Lunch Program) to foods and beverages that meet established nutritional guidelines.

          Physical education courses and opportunities for developmentally appropriate physical activity during the school day.

          Curriculum and programs for grades K-12 that are designed to educate students about proper nutrition and lifelong physical activity.


The Board of Directors shall be responsible to monitor school programs and curriculum to ensure compliance with this policy, related policies and established guidelines. Annually, the Executive Director of Champion Christian School shall report to the Board, based on information from staff and administration of CCS, in regards to the compliance with law and policies related to student wellness including:

 

          Assessment of school environment regarding student wellness issues.

          Evaluation of food services program (including assurance that guidelines for reimbursable meals are in continual accordance with federal law).

          Listing of activities and programs conducted to promote nutrition and physical activity.

          Feedback received from staff, students, parents/guardians, community members and Wellness Committee.


Guidelines


Wellness Committee

The Board shall continually, in regards to wellness matters and policies, consult with those individuals whom have agreed to advise on student health issues (including, but not exclusively physicians, administration, parents, students and food service personnel) to be considered the Champion Christian School Wellness Committee. The CCS Wellness Committee will stay advised of student needs as well as the latest research and laws related to student health and serve to advise the Board of such issues as well as solutions.


Nutrition Education

The goal of nutrition education is to teach, encourage and support healthy eating by students.

 

          Nutrition education shall provide all students with the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy lives.

          Nutrition curriculum shall be age-appropriate.

          Lifelong lifestyle balance shall be reinforced by linking nutrition education and physical activity.


Physical Activity (apart from Physical Education)

          CCS will strive to provide opportunities for developmentally appropriate physical activity during the school day for all students.

          A physical and social environment that encourages safe and enjoyable activity for all students shall be maintained.

          Physical activity shall not be used as a form of punishment


Physical Education

          Quality physical education instruction that promotes lifelong physical activity and provides instruction in the skills and knowledge necessary for lifelong participation shall be provided to all CCS students.

          Physical education classes shall be the means through which all students learn, practice and are assessed on developmentally appropriate skills and knowledge necessary for lifelong, health-enhancing physical activity.

          A varied and comprehensive curriculum that leads to students becoming and remaining physically active for a lifetime shall be provided in the physical education program.


Other School Based Activities

          CCS shall provide adequate space for eating and serving school meals.

          Students shall be provided adequate time to eat: twenty (20) minutes sit down time for lunch.

          Meal periods shall be scheduled at appropriate hours, defined as between the hours of 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.

          Drinking water shall be available at all meal periods and throughout he school day.

          Students shall have access to hand washing or sanitizing before meals and snacks.

          Fundraising projects submitted for approval shall be supportive of healthy eating and student wellness.

          Administrators, teacher, food service personnel, students, parents/guardians, and community members shall be encouraged to serve as positive role models in healthy living.


Nutrition Guidelines

          All foods available in district schools during the school day shall be offered to students with consideration for promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity.

          Foods provided through the National School Lunch Program shall comply with federal nutrition standards under the School Meals Initiative.

          All Competitive foods (defined as foods offered at school other than through the NSLP including but not exclusively ala carte items, fundraisers, vending machines, classroom parties, food used as rewards & school stores) will attempt to promote healthiness, nutritional balance and variety in diet along with appropriate portions as encouraged by federal nutrition standards.



The Champion Christian School Wellness Policy has been developed for the students of CCS with input from the National School Lunch Program, CCS parents & students, physicians, CCS Food Service Department, the Christian Family & Children’s Center Board of Directors and CCS Staff & Administration.


Adopted to take effect on August 28, 2006.


To be reevaluated annually by the CFCC Board of Directors at the conclusion of each school year beginning with the summer of 2007. The Board holds the authority to accept or revise the Champion Christian School Wellness Policy and will address it each year with specific focus on changes in school environment, affect on students and input from the CCS Wellness Committee.

            Upon review of the Champion Christian School Wellness Policy from the 2006-2007 school year, the Board of Directors has agreed to maintain the goals set forth in that wellness policy as well as approved implementation of the Nutrition Standards for Competitive Foods in Pennsylvania Schools, Year One for the 2007-2008 School Year. Implementation of Year Two has been set for the 2008-2009 School Year.


            In addition to the implementation of nutritional standards, the Board of Directors has approved the addition of a breakfast program for each campus and the addition of a cook to improve food quality.
